The lord Buddha Shakyamuni Turned the three serial
of Dharma wheel for the sake of his disciples after
setting a metaphor for how the Buddhahood is to be
attained i.e. generating the buddhichitta is the first,
the accumulation of merits for the three times countless
aeon is the second, and the third stage is entering
into the final stage of enlightenment.
The three serial of dharma wheel are subdued under
the ten states of wisdom knowledge. Among the ten
state of wisdom knowledge, study of grammar and logic
are encounter against those who do not have faith
in Buddha and dharma.
Those who are inclined towards the dharma have been
told the carpentry and the study of medicine. And
pervasive knowledge of philosophy (these are five
major wisdom knowledge) Above these, synonymous, the
art of drama, astrology, lexicography/ calligraphy
and poetry are also under the category of the ten
– wisdom knowledge (they are well known as well). The
principle and ordinary topic, here it is mainly dealt
with the different aspects of statue (image) i.e.
art of drawing Thangkha and of making statue. Here
the aspect of statue has two parts: drawing and making
statue. First, the explanation of how the art of Applique
Thangkha spread or flourished in the world; At the
time of the lord Buddha Shakyamuni, there were two
great kings who became a very closed friend and used
to send messages to each other. One day the king Auttayana
from the Dadrok city sent Wonderful silk dress adorned
with five great jewel String to the king Suikchen
Nyingpo, the king of Maghadha city.
In return, the king of Maghadha city planned to send
a wonderful gift. So the king asked the most famous
artist to draw an image of living Buddha Sakyamuni.
But the power of very high looking of the Buddha,
the artist was unable to copy directly from the living
Buddha. So, he requested the Buddha to stand near
a beautiful lake and then he made a drawing of Buddha
on a piece of cloth by copying from the reflection
of the Buddha in the lake. So, the king Sukchen Nyingpo
sent the drawing to the king Auttayana.
This drawing became very famous. The dedicated religious
sponsor (the land owner) sought permission from the
living Buddha to make an Applique Thangkha of the
lord Buddha like the previous one. So, the most famous
carpenter Bisho ( a manifestation of the king of God)
was requested to make the thangkha of Buddha with
the material of five different jewels. Those applique
Thangkha he made were the thangkha of eight years
old Buddha (the king Siddhartha), twelve and twenty
five years old Buddha Shakyamuni. The Applique thangkha,
which was offered to Muteek trishing, was well known
and naturally featured with lightening. This art of
drawing or stitching thangkha (applique) and making
statue had been good examples for the next generation.
Later many thangkha or statue of the great Indian
scholar Nagarjuna, made out of mud, drawing and stitching,
were established by copying the previous ones. Eventually
the spiritual king of Tibet (Trisong) invited the
great scholar boddhasatta from the city of sah-hor.
And as predicted by the scholar, the Guru Padmasambhava
from the Ogyen region who was predicted to be the
second Bouddha had been invited. The Guru Padmasambhava,
when came into Tibet, conquered all theevil forces
of mundane god and goddess. Moreover, he invited hundred
and eight great Indian scholars from India. For the
beauty of the country of Tibet, he established many
Applique thangkha and statue such as twelve completion
of Buddha for the base of Buddha’s body, three
basket of teaching for the base of Buddha’s
verbal sound and many trantric text have been translated
into Tibetan. Hence, even Atisha seemed to be flourished
in Tibet not in India.
Among the different Applique Thangkha and statue
made out of mud, and the thangkha made by the manifested
one, the art of Applique thangkha continuously flourished
all over the Tibet. Therefore, the three great translators
of tibet (kachokshang-som); The thre kings from western
side of Tibet (so suhr nub –sum); The three
kings of the holder of vinaya from the lower part
of Tibet (dhamtsang jam-sum); and the three victorious
kings of Tibet, during the times of their existence
this art of Applique Thangkha had been fashionably
flourished. . His Holiness the fifth Dalai Lama, at
the time of newly establishment of Buddha dharma in
Tibet, produced many Applique thangkha of Buddha,
bodhisattva and so forth. In brief, this art of making
Applique thangkhais very popular and is believed to
create countless amount of merits of the one’s
own life sake and for the others as well.
